Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship
Inside the Numbers
An In-Depth Look Into Season Stats Heading into the Final Off Week of 2015

The 2015 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship has reached its final break of the season as the series approaches its stretch run of the final three rounds. Just two races have passed since the last “Inside the Numbers” but the series statistics have evolved considerably. The battle for the championship in the 250 Class is far from over as another dramatic points swing at the previous round at Washougal MX Park has left just a handful of points separating Yamalube/Star Racing Yamaha’s Jeremy Martin and Red Bull KTM’s Marvin Musquin. Also, while Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey has a sizeable lead in the 450 Class, the battle for second has intensified between Autotrader.com/Toyota/Yamaha’s Justin Barcia and RCH Soaring Eagle/Jimmy Johns/Suzuki Factory Racing’s Ken Roczen, who now sit tied for the runner-up spot. The battles will continue next Saturday, August 8 at historic Unadilla MX in New Berlin, New York, with the Red Bull Unadilla National.

450 Class

  • Justin Barcia has been untouchable when it comes to holeshots as of late, scoring the last seven consecutive Motosport.com Holeshot Awards and a series-leading total of 10 through 18 motos this season. Despite that distinction, Barcia still has only the second-best starting average in the 450 Class.
  • Since earning his first career 450 Class win at Budds Creek, which moved him to third in the championship standings, Barcia has erased a 26-point gap to Ken Roczen in second in just six motos. They now sit in a tie for the position with three rounds remaining.
  • Over the last four rounds, dating back to Budds Creek, no rider has been better than Barcia, who’s average finish of 1.75 and 183 accumulated points top Dungey’s 2.6 finishing average and 178 points earned. During that span, Roczen has only averaged a fourth-place finish, scoring 146 points.
  • All of the manufacturer points acquired by KTM, who currently sits first, this season have been contributed by only on rider – Ryan Dungey.
  • Rookies Jason Anderson and Blake Baggett both have three overall podiums apiece, with Baggett scoring four moto podiums and Anderson three. They currently sit fourth and sixth in the championship, respectively.
  • Autotrader.com/Toyota/Yamaha riders Barcia, Weston Peick, and Phil Nicoletti all still hold positions inside the top 10 in the championship standings after nine rounds. Nicoletti has improved in recent weeks, surpassing his teammate Peick to move from ninth to eighth in the points.
  • Freddie Noren has been impressive in his fill-in role for Team Honda HRC, currently enjoying a top-10 streak of six motos with a best result of fifth. He’s also earned three consecutive seventh-place overall finishes, equaling his career-best each time. With the recent season-ending surgery to rookie Cole Seely, Noren will finish the season pitting out of the Factory Honda tent.
  • In two races with Monster Energy Kawasaki, Josh Grant has a pair of top-10 overall finishes. His best finish prior to joining the team was 19th at Thunder Valley.
  • Through nine rounds, Roczen has the lowest win total (1) in a full season title defense since Greg Albertyn went winless in defending his championship during the 2000 season. Chad Reed won only one race during his title defense in 2010, but missed the final five rounds with an illness.

250 Class

  • There has been a double-digit point swing between the two championship leaders, Marvin Musquin and Jeremy Martin, six times during the 2015 season. Nearly 100 points has been exchanged through these six rounds. Moreover, at no point this season have Martin and Musquin battled head-to-head for victory despite winning seven of the nine rounds (15 combined moto wins) thus far.
    • Glen Helen: Musquin +19 points
    • Thunder Valley: Martin +21 points
    • High Point: Musquin +14 points
    • RedBud: Martin +17 points
    • Spring Creek: Martin +12 points
    • Washougal: Musquin +15 points
  • Martin has one more overall win than Musquin (4 to 3), but Musquin has one more moto win than Martin (8 to 7). They share equal podium totals, both by moto (12) and overall (6). They have also equally outraced one another at four rounds apiece after tying for the win at the opening round.
  • For the first time in 2015, the championship leader in the 250 Class (Jeremy Martin) will carry the red number plate as the points leader for a third straight round.
  • Despite missing four rounds with an injury, Cooper Webb is on a tear, boasting the best finishing average in the division over the last three rounds (2.1) as well as back-to-back overall wins. As a result, he holds a spot inside the top 10 in the championship standings even though he’s raced nearly half as much as his fellow competitors.
  • Musquin is the only rider in both the 250 and 450 Class to lead more than 100 laps this season.
  • Kawasaki has yet to land a moto or overall win this season. If they remain winless in 2015, it will be the first time since the 2000 season.
  • KTM and Yamaha have earned every moto win this season. Yamaha has won with three different riders, while KTM has just one winner.
  • Martin has been the fastest qualifier for three consecutive rounds, but that has translated to just one overall win.
  • Martin has the most holeshots in the class (4), but averages a start around seventh place. As a result, he’s passing an average of more than four riders a moto en route to leading the championship.
