Red Bull KTM Rider Chases a Fourth 450 Class Championship This Summer

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (May 8, 2017) – With the start of the 2017 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, quickly approaching MX Sports Pro Racing would like to congratulate Team Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider Ryan Dungey on capturing his fourth AMA/FIM Supercross World Championship this past weekend in Las  Vegas. Already a three-time Pro Motocross 450 Class Champion, Dungey will chase a fourth premier class title this summer, beginning with the Red Bull Hangtown Motocross Classic on Saturday, May 20.

Dungey endured arguably his toughest title run to date, outlasting an incredible comeback from Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Eli Tomac. For the first time in his career Dungey was forced to clinch the championship at the final round in Las Vegas, successfully doing so despite winning just three races. While Dungey himself acknowledged that it was his hardest-earned title to date, his historic level consistency ultimately carried him to a third consecutive 450SX Class title, posting an average finish of 2.6 and claiming 13 podiums along the way. 

“We already know that Ryan Dungey is arguably the most consistent rider in the history of the sport, and he’s a proven champion capable of withstanding the toughest tests, but his championship-winning effort this season in supercross surely cemented his legacy as one of the all-time greats,” said MX Sports Pro Racing President Davey Coombs. “We look forward to watching Ryan continue his championship quest in the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, where he’ll also be in search of an incredible fourth title.”

With 39 career overall wins and 69 career podiums in the 450 Class, Dungey is already the second-winningest rider in the history of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, with only “The G.O.A.T.” Ricky Carmichael sitting ahead of him. Dungey will return to action this summer after a heartbreaking 2016 season in which he was forced to step away from competition due to injury miss races for the first time in his career. As a result, he is more motivated than ever to get back to his winning ways and put his KTM back at the front of the field. He’ll undoubtedly face a fierce challenge from Tomac yet again, as their rivalry will be expected to continue, as well as his Red Bull KTM teammate Marvin Musquin, with both Tomac and Musquin earning championship podium results in Pro Motocross last season. 

In addition to Dungey, MX Sports Pro Racing would also like to congratulate the pair of 250SX Class Regional Champions - Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing's Zach Osborne and Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki's Justin Hill. Osborne's path to the title was adventurous to say the least, but he recovered from a first turn crash in Las Vegas to emerge with his first career title in one of the sport's most memorable races of recent memory. Hill was a picture of consistency and dominance out west, giving the legendary Mitch Payton-led Pro Circuit Kawasaki effort it's landmark 20th title. Both riders are sure to make their presence felt in the 250 Class, looking to fill the title vacancy left by last year's titleholder Cooper Webb.

Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship

The Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing, features the world's fastest outdoor motocross racers, racing aboard the best bikes each factory offers, on the roughest, toughest tracks in the world. The 12-rounds series begins at Hangtown in May and ends at Indiana's Ironman Raceway in August. It includes stops at the premier motocross racing facilities in America, with events in California, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Michigan, Massachusetts, Maryland, Minnesota, Washington, New York and Indiana.
