SMX Next - Motocross

SMX Next will be featured at 10 events during the regular season, with a field of 25 athletes at five Supercross races and five Pro Motocross races for an equal balance of discipline representation. Prospects will earn points at each SMX Next race, where the first four events in each respective championship will set the stage for the SMX Next Showdown at the fifth and final race of Supercross [Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts] and Pro Motocross [Ironman Raceway in Crawfordsville, Indiana]. The total points scored across all 10 events will be used to determine seeding for the postseason SMX Next World All-Stars, which will once again be held at Playoff 1 and Playoff 2 of the SMX World Championship.

Athletes will be provided with an opportunity to earn their spot in the SMX Next World All-Star Championship at one of six American Motocross Majors, which represents the most prestigious and high-profile amateur events in the country.

The top three finishers in the 250A division at each event will earn their spot in SMX Next, with Loretta Lynn’s serving as an exception by accepting the top five finishers. A maximum of 20 athletes will qualify based on finishing position, while a minimum of five athletes will be selected by invitation. Qualifications earned during the current year will apply to the following SMX Next season, meaning results from each Major in 2026 will determine the field of prospects for the upcoming 2027 season.

Chest & Back Protection:
Approved chest and back protection are mandatory. The protector may be worn under or over the jersey, and it should cover the sternum anterior ribs, posterior ribs, and spine from T1 toT12.

Numbers:
Numbers must be Hi-Vis Purple Color Code = (PMS 2090 C) on White Background. 
You will be provided a front number plate ribbon with your coach’s name (This will be mandatory to have on your number plate prior to the 1st practice session)

  • New for 202: A racer must be 16 years of age and be an (A) classified competitor on the day of the event to compete in SMX Next Moto Combine.

  • The following professional licensed riders are not eligible for the program:

    1. Racers competing in the Final 40 in Pro Motocross (250 or 450 class) in more than three Pro Motocross events per year in the current or previous year.
    2. Racers competing in the Final 40 in Pro Supercross (250SX or 450SX class) in the current or previous year; or
    3. Racers competing in the Final 40 in an FIM MXGP or MX2 Grand Prix event outside of the United States in the current or previous year.
    4. Racers competing in the next-day’s Pro National in either class.

  • Since the Moto Combine is an invite only event, you must receive an email invitation from MX Sports Pro Racing with a registration link in order to register. Once you receive your invitation, you must register before the deadline for that event.

  • The engine displacement for the Moto Combine is 250cc 4-stroke, in accordance with the Approved Equipment List in the AMA Racing Regulations for motorcycle homologation.

  • Tuition for a SMX Next – Scouting Moto Combine Event is $200. This fee covers the rider’s gate fee, race fee and curriculum. It also allows the rider into the Pro Paddock, track access (at allotted times), and the venue fan viewing areas.

  • Yes. All riders must provide proof of medical insurance in order to register. If you don’t have insurance, the AMA offers easy and affordable medical insurance through its RAMP program (Rider Accident Medical Plan. https://www.jonesbirdsong.com/ramp/indexform.html

  • Yes. An AMA membership is required to compete in SMX Next and proof of membership must be presented at registration. AMA memberships are available @ www.americanmotorcyclist.com. 

  • Yes. An AMA membership is required to be a mechanic in SMX Next and proof of membership must be presented at registration. AMA memberships are available @ www.americanmotorcyclist.com.

  • No, your mechanic will need to purchase a mechanics pass for $80 on-site. Each rider is allowed one mechanic to accompany the rider through staging and in the designated Mechanic’s Area at allotted times. A mechanic’s pass also allows you access to the Pro Paddock. Persons less than 18 years of age are not allowed in the Mechanic’s Area.

  • You can purchase passes for your family and friends won-site hen you check-in on Thursday at the MX Sports Pro Racing Office.  The cost is $80 each and is good for admission and Paddock access through Saturday.

  • The rider’s registration includes the rider’s event entry, Pro Pit Pass and access to Sponsor Village and general fan viewing areas. Additional tickets (for friends, family, etc.) can be purchased by emailing [email protected].

  • Yes, all riders must check in on Thursday from 1-3 pm at the MX Sports Pro Racing Office in the Pro Paddock.

  • Yes, transponders are mandatory and will be provided by MX Sports Pro Racing. You will need to pick up your event transponder from the MX Sports Pro Racing Office when you check-in on Thursday.  These are on loan to you, so make sure you return your transponder after the race.  These are the same transponders the pros use, so they are very expensive, and you will be charged for failure to return them.

  • Yes. Overnight camping is allowed. Parking within the paddock opens Thursday afternoon, factory teams are afforded parking prior to Privateer riders and SMX Next riders.

  • Parking in the Paddock is free for active pitting vehicles only (i.e. If it hauls your bike in it can stay). If you are bringing a motorhome it must be hauling a race bike which will be entered to race in that event (via trailer or hitch) in order to gain access to the paddock. Paddock placement is determined by MX Sports Pro Racing at its sole discretion. All other vehicles will need to be parked in general parking.

  • Yes. You may bring food and drinks to consume within the paddock. However, all race personnel, riders, mechanics and anyone associated with riders and photographers must not consume or be under the influence of alcohol or drugs that could affect their normal mental or physical ability. Besides affecting the safety of the event, any such use is inconsistent with the concept of good sportsmanship and is harmful to the sport of motorcycling. Anyone found to be in violation of these policies is subject to disciplinary actions and can lead to forfeiture of AMA membership or event credential.

  • Still cameras are permitted at Pro Motocross events, provided that they are non-professional cameras (lenses shorter than six inches) and the photos are intended for personal use only. No footage of our events, either still image or video, may be used for any purpose other than personal use.

  • The top three finish athletes will receive metals, we will  award a Coaches’ Cup to the coach with the winning team.

  • Refund requests must be put in writing and sent to [email protected] no later than seven (7) days before the event. Refunds will not be accepted after that deadline.
