Race Report #2
Date: June 12, 2009
To: All AMA Pro Motocross Competitors
From: Jeff Canfield, Race Director
Subject: Staging Clarification and Schedule Changes
Staging:
There continues to be confusion on the staging procedure. This is largely a result of an inconsistency in the language of the prior rule. Starting with High Point, the following procedure will be applied and a Technical Bulletin adopting same will be issued by AMA Pro Racing forthwith:
3.13 Staging - NEW RULE
a.) Thirty (30) minutes prior to the start of each moto, a horn will be sounded signaling "first call" and that the staging area is open. Motorcycles must be taken to the staging area to await being loaded onto the gate.
b.) Twenty (20) minutes prior to the start, the entrance to the staging area will be closed and the starting gate will be loaded. Gate selection may be made by the rider or his designee. Motorcycles not in the staging area by the time of closure will not be loaded on the gate until all other riders/designees have selected their starting positions. Motorcycles arriving late will be loaded in the order of their late arrival to staging.
c.) Ten (10) minutes prior to the start, riders will be released for the sighting lap. The sighting lap is optional.
d.) Four (4) minutes prior to the start, all riders must have completed their sighting lap and re-entered their position on the starting gate.
e.) Once a motorcycle enters the staging area and is called to the starting gate, the motorcycle will not be permitted to return to the paddock. If the motorcycle is removed from the staging area after this point, the rider will not be permitted to start the race.
To be clear, the rider does not have to report to staging with his machine, and the rider does not have to be present when the gate is loaded. HOWEVER, the start of a race will not be held for any rider not present.
Start Procedure:
The start of a race will not be held for an unreasonable amount of time for the purpose of repairs. Contrary to popular belief, there is no 2-minute grace rule in AMA Pro Racing Motocross. The Start Procedure rule states:
3.14 Start Procedure
k.) Once the last rider is in the gate and the track is cleared for the start, the Race Director or his designee will direct the Starter to hold up a 30-second sign. The 30-second sign will be held upright for 30 seconds, and then turned sideways for at least five seconds, but not more than ten seconds. During the five- to ten-second interval, the gate will fall.
In the past, it has been the policy to hold the start of a race so long as the rider is making progress on the repair of his machine. This policy will no longer apply. The demands of live TV mandate that races start timely. Accordingly, in the event a rider requires time to make repairs, the time provided will be limited to a reasonable amount of time only as determined by the Race Director, providing that the delay does not impact the commitment for the TV broadcast. What is reasonable may vary from time to time based on the schedule of the day and television broadcast commitments.
Furthermore, in the event a rider needs to make repairs once loaded in the gate, the machine must be pushed back from its start gate position to behind the backstop before any repairs can be made, so as not to interfere with other competitors.
Technical Control:
The new hours implemented last week helped the tech lines tremendously. We would like to take it a step further with the following schedule:
12:00 - 1:00 pm Women's Class
1:00 - 2:00 pm Top 20 in both the 250 and 450 classes
3:00 - 6:00 pm Remaining riders and those above that missed their time slot
Please note that this new schedule results in Tech closing one hour earlier. Please pick up the Tech forms in advance at the MX Sports semi. Completing the forms in advance helped the procedure tremendously.
Rider Services:
For the remainder of the series, Rider Services at Will Call will be open as follows:
9:00 am - 5:00 pm Friday
7:00 am - 3:00 pm Saturday Pass sales will cease at 10:00 am
